Explore these Possibilities:

Bachelor's Degree studying just French, German, or Spanish OR Cross-Linguistics  (by combining courses from different areas, e.g., Spanish and TESL, French and Spanish, etc.) .

Teaching License in French, German, Latin, Spanish , or TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language).  (The TESL licensure must be added to another instructional license, however.)

Minor in any of these or in Classical Studies .

Language Specialist Honors Certificate (limited to the single language options).

Major in Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics (39 semester hours)

Core Requirements for all major options (Liberal Arts and Teaching)
Required courses: LLL 200-3 hrs; LLL 400-3 hrs
Additional Requirements: A minimum 2.5 GPA in all LLL course work must be maintained.  No coursework below the 200-level may be counted toward the major.

Minor in Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics (24 semester hours)

Core Requirements for all minor options (Liberal Arts and Teaching)
Required course: LLL 200-3 hrs.
Additional Requirements: A minimum 2.5 GPA in all LLL course work must be maintained.  No coursework below the 200-level may be counted toward the minor except for Classical Studies.

LIBERAL ARTS CURRICULA 

Major in Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics (39 semester hours)

Single Language Option (French, German, or Spanish)

Core Requirements (see above)
Additional Requirements: 33 hours in the primary language area (French, German, or Spanish) to be distributed as follows: 201-3 hrs.; 202-3 hrs.or equivalent of these two courses. 301-3 hours, 303-3 hours, 3 hours of culture at the 300/400 level, plus 18 additional hours of electives at the 300/400 level.

Cross-linguistic Option

Course work in the cross-linguistic option may be distributed across two or three languages or linguistic areas from within the Department where sufficient course work is available, for example Spanish and French, or Linguistics, German, and Japanese.

Core Requirements (see above)
Additional Requirements: 33 hours of additional course work from within the Department, 18 of which must be at the 300/400 level.

Minor in Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics (24 semester hours)

Single Language Option (French, German, Latin, or Spanish)

Core Requirements (see above)
Additional Requirements: 21 hours in the primary language area (French, German, Latin, or Spanish) to be distributed as follows: 201-3 hrs.; 202-3 hrs. or equivalent of these two courses, 301-3 hours or 303-3 hours (In Latin 301-3 hrs. or any readings course at the 300-level.) plus 12 additional hours of electives at the 300/400 level.

Linguistics/TESL Option

Core Requirements (see above)
Additional Requirements: 21 hours to be distributed as follows: 201-3 hrs. and 202-3 hrs. in a single language; LING 210-3 hrs., plus 12 hours of electives in Linguistics.

Classical Studies Option

Core Requirements (see above)
Additional Requirements: 21 hours to be distributed as follows: 15 hours in Ancient Greek or Latin to include Latin 215 plus 6 hours from appropriate courses, with the advisor's approval, offered by this department and/or the departments of History, Humanities, and Philosophy.

Additional Requirements: 33 hours in the primary language area (French, German, or Spanish) to be distributed as follows: 201-3 hrs.; 202-3 hrs.or equivalent of these two courses. 301-3 hours, 303-3 hours, 3 hours of culture at the 300/400 level, plus 18 additional hours of electives at the 300/400 level.  NOTE: For purposes of licensure, students pursuing the major on the teaching track must include in their 33 hours at least 3 hours of 300/400-level coursework in literature within the primary area.  LING 316, LLL 460, or LLL 490 (as approved by the advisor) is also required.

Minor in Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics (24 semester hours)

Additional Requirements: 21 hours in the primary language area (French, German, Latin, or Spanish) to be distributed as follows: 201-3 hrs.; 202-3 hrs. or equivalent of these two courses, 301-3 hrs. plus 12 additional hours of electives at the 300/400 level. NOTE: For purposes of licensure, students pursuing the minor on the teaching track must include in their 21 hours at least 3 hours of 300/400-level coursework in literature within the primary area. In addition to the 21 hours, LING 316, LLL 460, or LLL 490 (as approved by the advisor) is also required. 

Linguistics/TESL Option

Core Requirements (see above)
Additional Requirements: 21 hours to be distributed as follows: 201-3 hrs. and 202-3 hrs. In a single language; LING 210-3 hrs., plus 12 hours of electives in Linguistics/TESL. For purposes of licensure in English as a New Language directed electives are Eng 310-3 hrs. or Ling 311-3 hrs., Ling 413-3 hrs. or Ling 415- 3 hrs., LING 417-3 hrs. In addition, LING 316, LLL 460, or LLL 490 (as approved by the advisor) is also required. Coverage is K-12.

Language Specialist Honors Certificate

Students earning the Bachelor of Arts in Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics with the single language option may receive the Language Specialist Honors Certificate by fulfilling the following two requirements:

  1. Successful completion of an appropriate study abroad experience of at least 5 weeks in duration or equivalent approved experience.
  2. (a) Maintenance of a minimum grade point average of 3.5 in all course work applied to the major or
    (b) Completion of a nationally-recognized language exam in the primary area (e.g. one of those administered by the Goethe Institute in German or the American Association of Teachers of Spanish in Spanish) with a level of performance to be specified by the Department.
