Language Studies- Major
(effective Fall 2008)

Language Studies Major (31 hours) includes:

  • LLL200 "Introduction to Language and Culture for Students of Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics" (3 hrs.)--
    Required of all majors and minors so you become part of a community of language learners at ISU.

  • LLL400 "Senior Seminar for Students of Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics" (1 hr.)
    Providing a culmination and synthesis of your program of study.

  •  A second language or linguistics area course  (3 hrs. minimum)
    Broadening your language experience to expand your proficiency and your ability to meet demands of our current world. Up to two 100-level courses may be counted if in a second or third language or linguistic area.

  • Courses in your language(s) of choice at the 300/400 level (18 hrs. minimum)
    French, German, Spanish, TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language), or even Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, or another language if you have appropriate background for credit by examination, transfer credits, or study abroad.

  • Electives from within the Department or approved cognate course work from another department (6 hrs.)
    Cognate and culture courses in English may be counted only if the student has completed the equivalent of a 100-level course in the same language or linguistic area.

  •  Applied experience within the 31 hours.  Either: 
    A minimum of 6 credit hours of appropriate study abroad OR
    a minimum of 3 semester hours in LLL 409 in an approved internship.
    The applied experience requirement may be waived for second majors.
