MING ZHOU


PROFESSOR AND DEPARTMENT CHAIR

Dr. Ming Zhou received a Ph.D. in Systems and Industrial Engineering from the The University of Arizona in 1995. Currently he is an professor and department chair of ECMET in the College of Technology, Indiana State University (ISU).  Dr. Zhou is also the Cheif Researcher and Director of ISU's Center for Systems Modeling and Simulation (CSMS).  He has  taught courses in computer graphics, reliability and failure analysis, simulation modeling and analysis, statistics for experimental research, advanced computer aided design, graphical analysis calculus, experimental design and process analysis, strength of materials and machine element design, survey of logistics and distribution systems, etc. He has also taught courses in engineering statistics, industrial engineering methods, CAD/CAM, computer programming before joining the faculty of ISU.  Dr. Zhou has also given workshop/seminars to a number of national/international  institutions, on design of experiment (DOE), simulation modeling and analysis, and computer aided design/modeling.  Dr. Zhou is actively conducting applied research in several areas (see description below).  Dr. Zhou has been a member of IIE since 1993, and he also serves on the Editorial Board, International Journal of Industrial Engineering. Engineering  (IJIE), and the Editorial Board, Journal of Simulation, Operation Research Society. Dr. Zhou has also been an adjunct faculty at the Role-Hulman  Institute of Technology, and maintained visiting research professorships at Hua Zhong University of Science and Technology and Shen Zhen University (China).

 

Program / Curriculum Development

  • Dr. Ming Zhou has developed the following courses for undergraduate or graduate studies:
    • Reliability and Failure Analysis (undergraduate course)
    • Experimental Design and Process Analysis (graduate course)
    • Reliability, Maintainability and Serviceability (graduate course)
    • Application of Simulation Modeling and Analysis (graduate course)
    • Survey of logistics and distribution systems (graduate course)
  • Graduate students and senior undergraduates are also welcome to take independent study course with Dr. Zhou, and may select a topic from, but not limited to, the following areas: computer integrated manufacturing (CIM), CAD (geometric modeling, graphics, analysis), computer simulation, design/analysis of production/manufacturing systems, statistical quality control (SPC), design of experiment (DOE), industrial application of artificial intelligence (e.g., expert systems), production planning and inventory control, project management and scheduling, applied optimization, fuzzy-logic and neural network modeling, decision-making analysis, knowledge based simulation modeling.
  • Currently Dr. Zhou serves as the Program Coordinator for the Mechanical Engineering Technology Program (BS) in the department.

 

 

Current Research Interests / Activities

Dr. Zhou is the Chief Researcher and Faculty Supervisor at Center for System Modeling and Simulation (CSMS), housed in the College of Technology, Indiana State University, directing the Center’s R&D projects in the following areas:

  • Knowledge-based simulation modeling for discrete manufacturing systems
  • Pattern and knowledge-based modeling and simulation of logistics and distribution systems
  • Modeling and simulation of health-care delivery systems
  • Data mining and rule formation with neural networks, knowledge extraction from massive data/database
  • Case based reasoning (CBR) in the development of decision support systems for quality improvement and corrective actions
  • Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the design and control of engineering systems
  • Modeling, analysis and development of quality information system (QIS) in manufacturing environment

  • Honored 2005-2006 Indiana State University Lilly Foundation Undergraduate Fellow Faculty Mentor.
  • Research grant from ISU University Research Council, $2350, 1996. Process  Selection and Tolerance Allocation for Rotational Surfaces.
  • Research grant from ISU University Research Council, $2800, 1997. A Fuzzy Set Theory Based Methodology for Target Value Problem in Quality Improvement.
  • Received 1997 PIF Award from Indiana State University, $4160, 1997.  Modeling and Analysis of Cost and Damage Rate in Distribution Packaging.
  • Awarded a research grant in 1999: Artificial Intelligence and Knowledge Based System for Design and Optimization of Food Extrusion Process. $58,740; Kellogg Foundation, Battle Creek, Michigan.
  • Awarded a Lilly Faculty Fellowship in 1999 for conducting data mining research on the first-year undergraduate students profile database ($5,000), Lilly Foundation.
  • Received, in December 1998, the “Best Paper Award for 1997” from IIE Transactions, “Formation of Independent Flow-Line Cells Based On Operations Requirement and Machine Capability”, $500.
  • Awarded a research grant in spring of 2004: Knowledge-based approach for conceptual simulation modeling. $700. University Research Committee (URC), Indiana State University.
  • Awarded an international travel grant more than $5000, in 2002, 2003 and 2004 for international teaching and research exchange with universities in China.
  • Awarded an IRTS grant, $5000, Development of a prototype for intelligent conceptual simulation modeling, 2005, Indiana State University.
  • Received, in September of 2007, the Drs. Anil and Chetna Mital Best Paper Award for 2007 from International Journal of Industrial Engineering (IJIE); “Conceptual Simulation Modeling: Patterns and Knowledge Representation”.
  • Extramural funds generated through contracted research at ISU Center for Systems Modeling and Simulation: 2004 – present: exceeds $75,000.
