Middle/Secondary Teaching: Transition to Teaching Program

Description:

Indiana State University offers a graduate program to meet the needs of individuals seeking to obtain licensure to teach in middle school, junior high school, and senior high school settings. The graduate program leads to licensure as a middle/secondary teacher (grades 6-12) and, upon completion, individuals are eligible for an Indiana Initial Practitioner License in the content areas in which the individual meets program requirements.

  • The Middle/Secondary Teaching Licensure Program is an 18-credit-hour program.
  • Students complete fieldwork and a student teaching experience with co-mentoring and supervision from University faculty and outstanding practicing teachers.
  • This program is only open to eligible Indiana and Wabash Valley residents seeking middle/secondary licensure in:
    • Business
    • Chemistry (only available for high school)
    • Earth/Space Science
    • English
    • Language, Literature, and Linguistics 1
    • Life Science
    • Mathematics
    • Physics (only available for high school)
    • Physical Science
    • Social Studies 2
    • Technology and Engineering
  • Representations on licensing apply to licensing in the state of Indiana only. Potential students seeking licensing in other states should check with that state's educational licensing authorities on their requirements. Further restrictions may be found in the state specific information under the program availability link.

1 Students must select one of following: French, German, or Spanish.
2 Students must select three areas from the following: Economics, Geographical Perspectives, Government and Citizenship, Historical Perspectives, Psychology, and Sociology.)

Required Courses:

On-campus visits are required for this program and can vary based on the specific content area chosen.

  • Two one-day seminars are required. One seminar is offered during the Summer I term and one seminar is offered during the fall semester.
  • Depending on the content area selected, the required content methods course is offered only on campus during the fall semester. To determine on-campus requirements for a specific content area, contact Education Student Services.

Admission Requirements:

This program is only available to Indiana residents.

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum requirements:

  • Have earned one of the following:
    • A bachelor's degree in a related content area with a grade point average of at least 3.0, both in the major content area and overall
    • A bachelor's degree with a graduate point average of at least 2.5, both in the major and overall, and five years of relevant professional experience
    • A graduate degree from an accredited institution of higher education in the subject area that the person intends to teach
  • Present CASA (Basic Skills: reading, writing, mathematics) scores that meet the requirements of the Indiana Professional Standards Board prior to admission to the program
  • Present relevant PRAXIS II in student's content area that meets the requirements of the Indiana Professional Standards Board prior to prior to student teaching
  • Submit three letters of recommendation. Letters may originate either from academic or professional referees. Letters should support the applicant's motivation and ability to perform academically at the graduate level
  • Provide a current resume
  • Submit official transcripts of all post-secondary schools attended, including those indicating a bachelor degree from a regionally accredited institution
  • The GRE (Graduate Record Examination) is not required.

Note: All grade point averages from all institutions that contributed to the undergraduate degree are considered when calculating the overall grade point average (GPA).

Accreditation:

The University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

All ISU educator licensure programs and related school programs are accredited by the Indiana Department of Education and National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education.

Application Instructions:

  1. Obtain formal approval of your degree content from the content area advisor. Formal approval may require an on-campus interview.
  2. Complete the Application to Transition to Teaching Program.
  3. Submit the application and all of the following associated materials in a single packet to: Indiana State University, Transition to Teaching Programs/CIMT, Bayh College of Education, Room 219, 401 N. 7th Street, Terre Haute, IN 47809.
    • Candidate statement: describe in 500 words or less any subject area training, related professional experiences, and life-long learning experiences that relate directly to the skills, knowledge, and professional attributes associated with a career in education. The statement should describe; 1) the sequence of events that brought you to the decision to pursue a teacher license in Indiana, and; 2) any subject area training, related professional experiences, and life-long learning experiences that relate directly to the skills, knowledge, and professional attributes associated with a career in education.
    • Application fee of a $75 check or money order payable to Indiana State University
    • Current resume
    • Official transcripts sent in sealed envelopes
    • Score reports for Praxis I and II Exams

Once approved for admission to the Transition to Teaching program by the Bayh College of Education, an application to the College of Graduate and Professional Studies must be filled out and submitted to Graduate Admissions.

Note: Returning ISU students must apply for re-admission if they have not attended ISU for more than two calendar years.

Deadlines:

Applications must be submitted to the Department of Curriculum, Instruction and Media Technology by February 1.

Financial Aid & Assistance:

Graduate students may be eligible for federal student loans if they are admitted into graduate degrees (or first-time teacher certification programs) and meet other eligibility requirements. Certificate programs are not eligible for financial aid. Private alternative loans can help students pay college expenses that may not be covered by federal loan programs or other financial aid. Distance Education Students Residing Outside of Indiana: Each of the states has its own approval processes for out-of-state institutions offering distance education. While Indiana State University endeavors to offer all of its programs to as wide an audience as possible, all ISU distance education programs may not be available in all states.
