Horsing Around                                                        With Chris Marks, St. Mary of the Woods, Professor of Equine Studies

A tour, presentation, and discussion of the St. Mary of the Woods Equine Studies Department will be conducted by Department Chair Dr. Chris Marks. Attendees will have an opportunity to learn more about this unique program, tour the stables, and observe a riding class in action.

Opera Lecture– Most Happy Fella                           With David Watkins, ISU Professor Emeritus of Music 

Frank Loesser’s The Most Happy Fella is a Broadway musical that is almost an opera. There are arias, popular songs, and dialogue that is sometimes spoken, sometimes sung. As a prelude to the trip to Indiana University to see a performance, Dave and Nancy Watkins will discuss Loesser’s life and career as well as give an indication of the musical’s plot.

Dinner and Opera Evening in Bloomington Trip: Most Happy Fella                                  With Betty Martin 

Set in 1927 in Napa Valley, California, Tony Esposito falls in love with a young waitress, Rosabella. They exchange letters, but she does not remember ever meeting him and asks for his picture. Insecure about his age and looks, he sends Rosabella a photo of Joe, a handsome, young man. From that point on, misunderstandings, mistakes, as well as hilarious events unfold. Immerse yourself in a night filled with wonderful music, comedy, and a love story that will keep you on your feet as IU’s own Timothy Noble stars in The Most Happy Fella.

We will also have a special guest speaker for the dinner at Runcible Spoon and at intermission at the opera, Sylvia McNair. Two-time Grammy Award-winner Sylvia McNair is equally at home on the stages of Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall and in the intimate environs of the Rainbow Room and the Algonquin's legendary Oak Room, performing both classical and cabaret, opera and Broadway musicals.

Celebrating Culture and Cuisine – Thai         With Eileen Prose

The most celebrated holiday in Thailand is Songkran, the ancient New Year’s Day. Songkran marks the beginning of a new astrological year, when the sun enters the sign of Aries, the Ram. This celebration spans four days in the middle of April and includes many traditional activities and cuisine. The manager of the restaurant will provide us with a wide variety of Thai dishes. You will not be disappointed!

Celebrating Culture and Cuisine – Greek   With Eileen Prose

Members of the Greek Orthodox Church will observe Easter on Sunday, April 19, 2009.  In Greece, because of fasting during Lent, certain dishes are served to break the fast. However on Sunday afternoon many of the traditional Greek dishes are served. Lamb is the center of the feast, surrounded by many other dishes prepared in the traditional fashion. Magdy will prepare a “Greek Feast” to help us celebrate. When you witness the food he has prepared, you will think for a moment that you are in Greece. The extensive and authentic menu includes four appetizers, two main dishes, one vegetable, and a dessert. In addition, Ouzo (an aperitif), Retsina (a white resin wine), and Mavrodaphne (a dessert wine) will be available for purchase. These items are not included in the cost.

Walk Through Wild Flowers

Trek through the old-growth forest to see nature’s carpeted woodland floor. Learn to identify spring wildflowers during a short slide show and hike. Be sure to dress for the weather and muddy conditions!

Player Piano                                                      With Michael Kukral, Associate Professor of Geography, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology

Hosted by Professor Kukral in his home, this presentation includes demonstrations of various types of player pianos (including a Steinway player grand piano) and their music from the early twentieth century. Dr. Kukral will explain how player pianos work and using piano rolls from his extensive collection. He will also discuss restoration of older players pianos.

Indiana State Museum and Indianapolis Indians Baseball Game

Enjoy a day away! OLLI will be taking a trip to two of Indianapolis’s best attractions.  For those who want, you can spend the day walking the exhibits at Indiana State Museum learning about footprints of past and present animals that called Indiana home or enjoy watching Under the Sea or the Roving Mars movies at the IMAX Theater. At the same time, those who want to spend the day outdoors sitting in the sun, a baseball game is just the ticket.  Join other OLLI members at Victory Field watching the Indianapolis Indians take on Scranton.  You will be on your own for lunch.

Artists Among Us - Fran Lattanzio               With Fran Lattanzio, ISU Professor of Art and Photographer 

Fran will demonstrate and discuss various photographic techniques and processes and the changes that have occurred with the advent of digital photography. Participants will have an opportunity to make a traditional “darkroom” print. Feel free to bring a black and white negative with you (or create a non-camera based image).

A Double Treat in the Country!!                    With Mark and Teresa Hildebrand

You are invited to visit a beautiful ranch/farm west of Fairbanks to see and learn about the rare breeds of sheep, lovingly raised by Teresa and to tour their unique home designed and built by Mark. Their two breeds of sheep are raised both for fiber and meat and also milk products. There maybe some new born lambs. Their home was constructed with recycled stainless steel on the outside and hardwood harvested from their farm. 

Shepherd's pie and a selection of sheep cheese will be served for lunch.  

Wear shoes you wouldn't mind getting soiled.

A Tour of Black Dog Vineyard                      With Kevin and Linda Hoolehan, Owners of Black Dog Vineyard 

Come and enjoy a beautiful morning in one of Wabash Valley’s own vineyards.  Tour the winery and learn about the different grapes grown in Indiana,  Discover which insects and wildlife pose a problem to the vineyard, and what approaches are used to control weeds and mold. Hear why the trellis system, training, pruning,  harvesting, and pressing of grapes are so important aspect. You can’t go on a tour of a vineyard without a wine tasting!!

The Beauty of Bonsai                                      With Norma Evans 

Bonsai is an ancient oriental horticultural art form. Norma Evans has been involved with creating bonsai plants for twenty years.  She will show us her collection and demonstrate some of the techniques employed to create a bonsai plant.

Crossroads Repertory Theatre - Much Ado About Nothing 

Widely known as one of Shakespeare's most entertaining comedies, MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING tells the tale of two unlikely lovers who are simply too wise to woo!  While waiting for Claudio and Hero to be married, what are the wedding guests to do?  They begin a romantic battle of the sexes between Benedick (Brandon Wentz), an avowed bachelor, and Beatrice (Amy Attaway), a woman whose razor-sharp wit has kept her from the veil.  Add a series of twists and turns, three menacing villains, and a clueless neighborhood watch, and you have a romantic comedy worthy of the Bard!  Developed by the creative team that brought you last year's dazzling production of MACBETH, MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING promises to be a visual and technological treat for all audiences!  OLLI is also offering a course on Shakespeare’s play Much Ado About Nothing. Tour of French Lick Springs Hotel and West Baden Springs Hotel

Join other OLLI members as we step back in time with tours of French Lick Springs Hotel and West Baden Springs Hotel. We will also be having lunch at the French Lick Springs Hotel’s Grand Colonnade Restaurant.

French Lick Springs Hotel (Resort) - Established in 1845, with the original east wing built in 1901, French Lick Springs Hotel attracted guests from around the world to experience the "miracle waters" of its nearby sulfur springs. Now this classic hotel has been restored to its famed charm and grandeur.

West Baden Springs Hotel (Resort) - West Baden Springs Hotel is anything but ordinary—it is an extraordinary experience. You will be captivated once you set foot inside this National Historic Landmark (NHL) built in 1902. With its one-of-a-kind domed atrium spanning 200 feet, it has been called the "Eighth Wonder of the World." Rooms rise in six tiers around the dome, and balcony rooms provide a panoramic view of the atrium.

Cost: $60 (This price includes transportation to French Lick Indiana, lunch at The Grand Colonnade Restaurant (Buffet style) and tours of French Lick Springs Hotel and West Baden Springs Hotel.) Dinner will not be provided.

Tour of Rose Hulman Institute of Technology

From Hatfield Hall to White Chapel -- from Highway 40 to the Sports Complex -- Rose-Hulman offers noteworthy art, architecture and landscaping.  On this tour you will not only visit various sites (weather permitting), but you will also receive an introduction to the campus by Bill Foraker, Director of Development - Special Programs, and an introduction to the campus art collection by Steve Letsinger, the Art Curator.  Lunch will be available at the Rose-Hulman Union for $5.  The afternoon will include a campus tour beginning with White Chapel and ending at  Hatfield Hall where President Gerald Jakubowski will give a short presentation.
