Our Place in Space

Planetarium Director
The program will begin by
discussing the mind numbing concept of the Universe. Through laser
disc images participants will view types of galaxies and interacting
galaxies. The program will then introduce our sun and solar system’s
place within the Milky Way and present what we know (and don’t know)
about the numerous other planets that have been discovered outside
our solar system. The program will continue by introducing new and
exciting information about the planets and natural satellites
(formerly known as moons) in our solar system. As always the program
will finish with a tour of the night sky for the late summer to
early fall months. Those attending will receive a sky calendar so
they may continue their star gazing at home. The approximate length
of the program is an hour to an hour and a half depending on
questions and discussions.

Underground Railroad Bus Tour
Join us for an all day trip back in time. We will take a tour bus
from ISU campus to Louisville, Kentucky and Jeffersonville, Indiana.
The first stop on our bus tour will be to the Louisville Slugger
Museum and Factory. After enjoying a short film in the 100-person
capacity theater, walk through the full-size dugout and onto the
museum's playing field. Get involved with interactive displays (like
experiencing the sensation of a 90 mph pitch coming right at you),
set your eyes on rare baseball equipment and memorabilia, and walk
through a replica of a "white ash forest". Complete the tour with a
walk through the Louisville Slugger manufacturing facility and see
bats being turned for today's baseball stars and tomorrow's major
leaguers. The second leg of our trip will be to an event from the
Indiana Freedom Trails.
This event is a dedication for Hannah Tolliver, an engineer on the
Underground Railroad. Her story is remarkable and part of it will be
re-enacted for us during this event. We will also have music from
the area’s children choir singing slave songs and a lecture by Dr.
Charles L. Blockson. All this while taking part in the reception and
meal at the Falls of the Ohio.
Lunch is not included in price.

Are You Already 50 Years Old----But Not Yet Over the Hill???
By
Donna Braden
There is no upper age limit for serving in the Peace Corps! Many of
those who remember hearing John F. Kennedy say “Ask not what your
country can do for you…ask what you can do for your country” are now
realizing that “call to service” really does include them. This age
group is completing careers, completing day-to-day child rearing
responsibilities, and asking themselves, “What’s next?”
Donna Braden, 50+ Recruiter at the Chicago Regional Peace Corps
Office, served in Peace Corps after reaching age 60. She was an
Environmental Volunteer in Kryvyi Rih, an iron mining and steel
refining city in Eastern Ukraine. She worked mostly with young
people. When discussing the impact she made she says she “planted
lots of seeds.” She had incredible experiences camping with
teenagers in the Ukrainian steppe land, traveling on a short
vacation to Odessa, enjoying the historic atmosphere of Lviv and
Kiev and Slavianagorsk.
Come hear Donna discuss her Peace Corps experiences and the benefits
she gained from serving. And, if you’re so inspired, learn how you
can add new experiences to your lifelong list.
Date/Time: Friday, March 7, 2008 from 1:30 - 3:30 PM Place: ISU
