Creating Artistic Photography
With Jim Avelis, Tribune-Star photographer
To Jim Avelis, light is the most important factor in
photography. He works
with all light sources to define and exhibit his subject matter as
accurately, truthfully
and artfully as possible.
The angle, high, low, or up close, can show viewers what they
ordinarily don't see, such as action in sports and nature as well as
stock views. The ability
to capture the action can separate good from great photography, he
stresses. Topics of his
photos include accidents, fires, shootings, orange jump suits (the
perp walk from jail to the courthouse), birthdays, picnics, sunsets,
and hummingbirds. Also
crucial is access to where you take pictures, which might include
tennis courts, platforms, buffer zones up close to celebrities. As
for gear, Jim says it doesn't have to be all that expensive ... it's
how you use it! Have
your questions ready!
