Springfield Illinois Trip

We will be visiting Lincoln’s Tomb, Lincoln’s Museum, and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Dana-Thomas House. The first stop on our trip will be to Lincoln’s tomb. The tomb was designed by sculptor Larkin Mead, and features famous Lincoln statuary. It’s worth a visit just to see the sculpture, both inside and out.  The tomb holds the bodies of Lincoln, his wife Mary, and  three of their four sons. We will have a quick lunch downtown before going on to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. The Presidential Library houses the most complete collection of Lincoln documents and artifacts in the world. The new facility will present Lincoln as he has never been presented before, using the latest interactive technology, including dramatic film. Our last stop of the day will be the Frank Lloyd Wright Dana House. It was in 1902 in Victorian Springfield when local socialite and activist, Susan Lawrence Dana hired a rising young architect from Chicago to remodel her family home. The Museum also features national and international traveling exhibitions throughout the year. We will have private tours of two exhibits. One tour will be the Giovanni Bellini and the Art of Devotion. This installation of three paintings from IMA's collection focuses on the practice of painting in Giovanni Bellini's workshop in Venice, with emphasis on how images of the Madonna and Child were created and copied. Making extensive use of technical documents such as X-radiographs, infrared reflectograms, and paint cross sections, it introduces visitors to the materials and working methods of the Renaissance painter and to modern scientific methods used to study artistic practices. The second tour will be of Power and Glory: Court Arts of China’s Ming Dynasty. Featuring a full range of objects in use at the imperial court of the Ming dynasty, this exhibition is being organized by the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco in association with the Palace Museum, Beijing; the Nanjing Municipal Museum; and the Shanghai Museum. It is the first major exhibition to focus solely on the court arts of the Ming dynasty. Some of the objects in the exhibition are from newly excavated tombs of individuals related to the Ming court and have never been shown before outside of China. The exhibition is comprised of more than 200 items that include paintings; gold and jade; textiles; jewelry; architectural and funereal objects; carvings and lacquer pieces; porcelains; and enamel and metal work. After opening at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, the IMA will be the first of two touring venues to host this exhibition. Lunch and dinner will be on your own.
