Counseling Psychology Ph.D.

The minimum coursework is divided among the following areas:

Behavioral Science Core: Students specializing in Counseling Psychology must complete a sequence of courses which provides in-depth theoretical and philosophical understandings in the psychology of human behavior. A minimum of 20 hours is required for this core area. A minimum of three semester hours of course work is selected in each of areas one through four. The remaining hours are filled with electives across all areas. 

1. Biological Bases of Behavior (only one course is necessary)

2. Cognitive-Affective Bases of Behavior (only one course is necessary)

PSY 603 Proseminar: Learning and Cognition (Required)

3. Social Bases of Behavior (only one course is necessary)

4. Individual Differences

PSY 662 Theories of Personality (Required)
PSY 668 Advanced Psychopathology (Required)
SPSY 666 Individual Assessment of Intelligence (Required)

One of the following is also Required:
EPSY 621 Lifespan Development
EPSY 721 Seminar in Human Development
PSY 566 Human Ontogeny
 

Additional courses in Individual Differences include:
EPSY 521 Advanced Child Psychology
EPSY 522 Adolescent Psychology
SPSY 682 Personality Appraisal I
SPSY 687 Personality Appraisal II
 

5. Other Behavioral Science Courses (Such as anthropology or criminology)


Educational Foundations: Counseling Psychology students take a minimum of 15 hours in this area.

Students are required to take:

EPSY 612    Statistical Methods
EPSY 710    Introduction to Qualitative Methods and Inquiry
EPSY 712    Inferential Statistics

 and one of the following

          EPSY 711   Advanced Qualitative Methods and Inquiry
            Or
          EPSY 713    Statistical Design in Behavioral Research


Counseling Psychology Specialization: Students must fulfill a minimum of 49 required hours in this area. An additional 18 hours of dissertation are also required. Students take or have transferred in:

COUN 634 Counseling Practicum (6 hours)
COUN 628 Psychological Appraisal in Counseling I
COUN 633 Theories of Counseling
COUN 635 Career Development
COUN 666 Multicultural Counseling
COUN 728 Psychological Appraisal in Counseling II
COUN 732 Consultation
COUN 733 Group Counseling
COUN 736 Research Seminar (must be taken at ISU)
COUN 738 Professional Seminar (must be taken at ISU)
COUN 793A  Supervised Fieldwork (must be taken at ISU)
COUN 833 Introduction to Counseling Psychology (must be taken at ISU)
COUN 834 Supervision of Counseling (must be taken at ISU)
COUN 835 Seminar in Career Development
COUN 837 Advanced Counseling Practicum (must be taken at ISU)
COUN 891 Internship (6 hours)
COUN 898 Doctoral Student Seminar (during first semester only, students register for one hour, but continue while on campus)
COUN 899-Dissertation - A total of 18 hours are required.

Students register for COUN 793A: Fieldwork when completing supervised clinical practice experiences.
