Fellowships and Scholarships for Ph.D. Students

No guarantees can be made regarding financial assistance, however, we have a long and consistent record of supporting all doctoral students who are eligible under Graduate School rules and request it.  Though fellowships and scholarships must be applied for each semester and summer term, the department typically supports students for three years.  The following numbers are designed to help you make comparisons among programs.  When comparing programs understand that ISU separates fellowship support from tuition waivers.  This means that you pay taxes only on the fellowship (stipend) portion of the award.  This is to your benefit.  Some institutions provide a lump sum upon which you pay taxes and from which you must then pay tuition.  Bear this in mind when making comparisons.

The fellowship provides a stipend for living expenses ($5,000.00) for the academic year.  Summer school fellowships have also been available and pay $400.00 for each of the two five-week terms totaling $800.00 for the summer.  This is the portion of your income liable for income tax.

Scholarships provide for tuition waivers for up to 24 hours of course work during the calendar year.  Additionally, scholarships for summer school have also been available which provide for up to six hours in tuition waivers for the two summer terms.  The total of tuition waivers comes to 30 hours for students enrolled in both terms of summer school.  Taxes are not paid on tuition waivers.

We can project, based on 2001-2002 data, what the financial package would be worth across three years:

Out of State Students

Fellowship (academic year) $5,000 X 3 yrs.       15,000.00

Summer I & II Scholarship $369/hr. X 6 hrs X 3 yrs.  6,642.00

Total

55,038.00

            In-State Students
