Counseling Psychology Ph.D.

Application and Admissions.

The Application Process - To be admitted to the graduate program leading to the Ph.D. degree, you must comply with all general regulations of the School of Graduate Studies, the College of Education, and the Department of Communication Disorders and Counseling, School, and Educational Psychology. Potential students must complete an application for admission to both the School of Graduate Studies and the Counseling Area.

Application requirements for the School of Graduate Studies  and the Counseling Area include: 

  1. Completed School of Graduate Studies Application form
    a. In MS Word form
  2. A check or money order for U.S. $35.00 exactly must accompany the application form. Applications/documents will not be processed prior to receipt of the $35.00 fee. All applications, even from students who have previously applied to ISU, must be accompanied by the $35.00 fee.
  3. Statement of intent for Ph.D. applications.
  4. If you are not an American citizen by birth provide Proof of Permanent Residency or proof of acquired US Citizenship.
  5. Official Scores on the General Tests of the Graduate Record Exam
  6. Official transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate institutions attended
  7. Completed Departmental Application Supplement
    1. MS Word format
  8. Completed Clinical Experiences Supplement (MS Word Format)
  9. Current Professional Resume/Vita
  10. Three recent professional/academic letters of recommendation

All material from the School of Graduate Studies and the Counseling Area must be received by the Counseling Psychology Admissions Committee no later than January 1.   Early applications are encouraged.

Admission criteria include

  1. Have scores on the General Tests of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or the Miller Analogies Test (MAT). GRE and MAT standardized scores are used in conjunction with other admissions criteria.
  2. GPA of 2.5 or above on all undergraduate work.
  3. GPA of 3.5 or above on all graduate work.
  4. A master's degree in Counseling or a related area.
  5. Career goals consistent with the profession of Counseling Psychology
  6. Applicants may be invited for a personal interview with Admissions Committee

The Committee may waive one of the above listed criteria if other evidence of the applicant's promise to pursue the program is presented. However, it must not be assumed that meeting minimal standards guarantees admission to the program.
