Xiaoxia “Silvie” Huang serves as an Instructional Design Specialist at the Center for Instruction, Research, and Technology at Indiana State University. Her main responsibilities include consulting with the faculty member(s) to support the design, development, and delivery of traditional and distance courses, and coordinating and assisting instructors in the development and delivery of on-line and web-enhanced courses and providing expertise and guidance in a wide variety of instructional technology applications.

Silvie will be officially awarded her Ph.D. degree in Instructional Systems from Florida State University in Fall 2007. She received her Bachelor’s degree in English Language and Culture from Nanchang University in China and her Master’s degree in English Studies from National University of Singapore.

With a background of several years’ teaching experience at the university level and systematic instructional design, Silvie is interested in applying different theories and technologies and working with faculty to help create optimal teaching and learning environments. At the same time, she considers herself a lifelong learner who is always willing to explore new teaching techniques/technologies and better practices for teaching and learning improvement.

Silvie is also interested in using research findings to guide the practice of instructional design. She has presented or co-presented research studies at national and international conferences, with topics ranging from pedagogical agents, cognitive load theory, team cognition, to student self-evaluation. She would like to do more explorations in the areas of student online collaboration and cognitive load theory-based instructional design.
