Description of Program

The Correction Education Program began its mission at ISU in 1988 with Putnamville Correctional Facility; its sites now also include Plainfield Correctional Facility, Rockville Correctional Facility, Wabash Valley Correctional Facility, and the Terre Haute Federal Correctional Complex. The CEP program is administered uniformly at all sites; its joint administrative duties are shared by the Correction Education Program office and the College of Arts and Sciences.  In addition, other ISU administrative offices (e.g., Admissions Office, Office of Registration and Records, Controller’s Office, and Student Financial Aid) perform duties as appropriate. The following degree programs are offered at the above-mentioned sites:

·         AA degree in Liberal Studies

·         BS degree in Liberal Studies

The current focus of these degree programs is a liberal-studies based concentration titled “Human Interaction and Expression.” However, new concentrations are being initiated to provide a range of job-preparedness options within a solidly grounded liberal-studies curriculum. The AA degree coursework is delivered on-site, with classroom space provided by and within the facilities. The BS degree coursework is delivered via IHETS; a proctor serves as the classroom monitor as the students interact with the instructor via two-way video conferencing.

The CEP office and the College of Arts and Sciences work together daily to ensure smooth and uniform administration of the CEP program.  The CEP office provides the on-site staff to work directly with Indiana Department of Corrections’ facilities and personnel and to interact with individual students. The College’s deanship and support staff determine the curriculum, monitor each student’s degree plan, and provide academic guidance and oversight. The following procedures help us achieve our goal of delivering the same courses and same programs to our CEP students as we do to our on-campus students:

  •  Each site relies upon a prepared rotation of coursework that determines which classes are offered each semester. (I.e., as soon as a CEP student matriculates, he/she is assigned a schedule of classes for each of his/her semesters leading to graduation). A certain amount of flexibility is built into the rotation to accommodate transfer students, or students with other anomalous scheduling situations.

  • CEP curricula are based on our on-campus Liberal Studies program. Any changes are processed through the normal University curriculum procedure, thus ensuring the same levels of review and consideration that are accorded on-campus curricular changes.

It is the policy of Indiana State University that all practices and procedures related to the education records of students shall be in accord with the provisions of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, as amended. This policy has been implemented by the development of guidelines for record keepers and a listing of the education records on campus. Both the guidelines and the listing are available for review by students.
