An introduction to the history of video art and its contemporary tendencies. The 20th century section includes groundbreaking works by video art pioneers Dan Graham, David Hall, Gary Hill, Joan Jonas, Nam Jun Paik, and Bill Viola. In the 1960s, 70s and 80s these artists explored the potential of the new medium in formalistic and personal investigations. Among the works in the 21st century section are videos that combine hand-made processes and digital manipulation, alter appropriated cinematic footage and, synthesize art and science, as well as real-time internet projects. The contemporary artists are: Stephanie Barber, Michael Takeo Magruder, Takeshi Murata, Hiraki Sawa, and Semiconductor. Collectively they explore concepts ranging from childhood memories to natural forces and media criticism to digital formalism.
