History
North Hall was the second building and was an addition to the Normal School building "Old Main". It housed the Normal School's Library on the entire first floor, Science department and labs on the second floor and the men's and women's gymnasium in the basement. The Library was given the entire first floor. The library began in 1870 with a bible and a dictionary that had been donated by a publisher. Later Chauncey Rose donated $4K for a library collection. The president purchased books and his office was used as the library in the first Indiana State Normal building. Arthur Cunningham was appointed the first librarian. He was instrumental in the development of the library collection and the later State Normal Library. The gymnasium was located in the basement. Despite the columns basketball was played there for many years. The columns were padded during games in case a player should run into them.
