Little attention was given to sports in the early days of Indiana State, because of the lack of proper facilities. Indeed the school made no serious effort to provide physical training until 1895, when gymnasium space was made available in the, then newly - constructed North Hall. The following spring the baseball team "won it's first great victory when , dressed in overalls and straw hats, the players met and succeeded in completely defeating the crack Polytechnic team." Thus the program of athletics was begun. Since that beginning of the school and in the extra-curricular activities sponsored by the school. The field of physical education has taken an important place in the curriculum.
It was not until the building of the new Physical Education building in 1928 that Indiana State enjoyed really adequate facilities for physical training. The building contained two athletic floors, one each for the men and woman students, in addition to classrooms, storerooms, locker rooms, and offices. The gymnasium for men where the intercollegiate contests were held, had a seating capacity of approximately three thousand.
