Founders Day History
In 1865 the State of Indiana established this
institution to help prepare better teachers.
The doors were first opened to students on
January 6, 1870, and since that time Indiana State
University has served as a source, not only of
information and learning, but also of inspiration,
ideals, and encouragement.
On that cold day in 1870, 21 students enrolled for
classes.
Since that time more than 90,000 individuals have earned
degrees at our University.
The educators and administrators at the
University who became their mentors and friends have
influenced the lives, careers, and ideals of our
graduates.
On this celebration of Founders Day, we are assembled to
honor our University and to pay tribute to all the men
and women who have been associated with Indiana State
during its distinguished history and have, through many
avenues, brought praise to our Alma Mater.
In their memory, we pay tribute to our founders,
builders, and benefactors for their tremendous insight,
leadership and generosity.
The familiar Book and Torch of the
University seal are the symbols of this tradition.
The book symbolizes knowledge; the Torch
symbolizes the light of inspiration.
